I have been in Hong Kong for about a week and a half now and have scouted out some of the best and cheapest places to eat around Tai Koo and Causeway Bay. But it wasn’t always like that. When I first arrived after a nine hour flight, I was content with gorging myself on the plethora of accommodating Golden Arches and Colonel’s Favourite ‘family restaurants’ available around every corner. As such I got sick of it pretty quickly. Three days of that stuff for dinner is enough to make you cry, but you can’t because all the grease and fat has clogged your tear ducts.
So I ventured forth and got out of the comfort zone I had cocooned myself in and headed to a steak restaurant at my hotel. Ha! They are nothing like the thick, juicy cryo-vac fillets back home, but it had texture and flavour and my body was thanking me. Octopus on a stick dipped in chili sauce is a great little snack, as are the skewered mini dim-sims. The pork balls are probably my favourite at the moment – big and tasty. That sounds really bad! But they seriously good for a snack. The super markets are also a great source for a cheap, warm and filling meal too. Have to thank Gen for that tip!
Anyway, the next place I have to try is Yung Kee and its famous goose. But I have to get back to gym – a week and bit since I last did anything strenuous is making me feel like an obese statistic!
